Cabinet Basics Hub · IP Rating / Load / Cooling / Container Room

Before choosing a cabinet or designing a sheet metal shell, get the basics right. Xingyuan Electric (Suzhou) assembled this cabinet basics hub: IP54 vs IP65, how to calculate cabinet load, cooling and thermal management, container electrical room selection, and laser vs turret punch. Not sure which to pick? Send us drawings for a review.

A cabinet is the "house" of electrical equipment. Whether it is solid, leaks, gets hot or can be moved whole depends on a few basics: IP rating, load, cooling and form. Below we explain the highest-frequency concepts; follow the links for deep dives.

Cabinet basics overview

IP rating

Dust and water resistance; higher number = harsher environment.

Load

Static and dynamic capacity of frame and shelves.

Cooling

Natural convection, forced air, heat exchanger.

Form

Floor cabinet, wall cabinet, container room.

IP rating: IP54 vs IP65

First digit = dust (0-6), second = water (0-8). IP54 limited dust + splash, for most indoor electrical. IP65 full dust + spray, for outdoor, humid, dusty. Pick by environment: indoor distribution IP54 is enough; outdoor or washdown IP65, with gaskets and roof.

Cabinet load (static / dynamic)

Load splits into static (settled equipment weight) and dynamic (transport, lift, quake). Calculate shelf thickness, stiffeners, frame section and total rating, and consider center of gravity and transport fixing. Heavy racks and distribution cabinets must be calculated clearly.

Cabinet cooling & thermal management

Heat leaves three ways: natural convection (vents, fins), forced air (fans, ducts) and heat exchanger / AC (sealed high power). Balance protection vs intake: an IP65 sealed cabinet uses a heat exchanger rather than holes. We build ducts, fins and exchanger mounts by power and IP.

Container electrical room selection

A container room integrates distribution, control, storage or equipment in a standard box — good for temporary power, sites, mining and overseas. Choose by size, protection/insulation, internal trays, layout and transport; keep service aisle, intake/exhaust and earthing.

Laser cutting vs turret punch

Laser cutting

Flexible, good for shapes and small batches, clean edge, low burr — the mainstream.

Turret punch

Fast and cheap for high-volume standard hole patterns; limited on shapes.

Rule: shapes, small batches, high edge quality → laser; high-volume standard holes → turret punch is cheaper. Xingyuan runs laser-primary with CNC punch as support.

FAQ

What is the main difference IP54 vs IP65?

Dust: IP54 limited, IP65 full. Both resist spray (second digit 5), but IP65 is cleaner on dust — better for dusty/outdoor. Outdoor prefers IP65.

How to estimate cabinet load?

Static weight sets shelf/frame load; add dynamic factor for transport/lift/quake to set thickness and stiffeners. For heavy cabinets, send equipment weight for our calculation.

How to cool an IP65 sealed cabinet?

Sealed cabinets avoid holes; use a heat exchanger or AC to move heat out; low power can use natural convection with fins.

What to watch in a container room?

Size, protection/insulation, internal trays, layout and transport; reserve service aisle, intake/exhaust and earthing.

Laser or turret punch?

Shapes, small batches, edge quality → laser; high-volume standard holes → turret punch. Xingyuan runs laser-primary.

Can you help us choose?

Yes. Send drawings or a list; our engineers advise selection and sheet metal by environment, load and cooling.
